LIKE THE “WORLD CUP” OF FOOTBALL… IN SAILING!
Just like football has its World Cup, sailing will now have its own: the SSL GOLD CUP
It is “THE” ultimate challenge between sailing nations to crown the Sail- ing Champion. Developed from an initiative by the best sailors on the planet and founders of the SSL (Star Sailors League), the SSL GOLD CUP will be raced in 14m performance racing boats with a format mod- eled on the Football World Cup. Like that pinnacle event in football, the SSL Gold Cup will see 56 teams of 11 athletes on the water. Each will be wearing the colors of their nation, affiliated to World Sailing, the international federation that counts 144 members.
Human, sport and emotions
Thanks to the support of the event’s organizers, all teams will be provid- ed with boats and benefit from the hospitality in the official SSL training center for the duration of the competition and training sessions. Like the Football World Cup, the SSL GOLD CUP will bring together all the best athletes of the discipline in a singular equal opportunity challenge for teams. 1. FOUNDATION “SAILING ATHLETES FOUNDATION”
The SSL Gold Cup long term existence is guaran- teed by the support of the “Sailing Athletes Founda- tion” (SAF). The SAF is a non-profit entity based in Switzerland whose resources are meant to support and worldwide promote inshore sailors. The SAF is the umbrella for the SSL Gold Cup and provides the boats to participating teams.
Equal opportunity for men and women is one of the priorities of both the SSL Gold Cup and the SSL. The selection through the global ranking gives the very same opportunity to men and women to be included in their national team based only on merit from their sailing achievements.
The SSL and the SAF have developed two training centres to prepare the athletes from all countries to race with their own team on big boats. The clinics organised by the SSL offer top class training condi- tions and allow the younger sailors to learn from the champions, for optimal knowledge transmission.
4. VIRTUAL STADIUM
The SSL Gold Cup aims to gather sport fans from around the world in the “virtual stadium” to follow their team via free live online broadcast. It will be ac- cessible on the 56 official team websites translated in 30 languages. No less than ten million spectators are expected to watch the sailing show specifically created and broadcasted live by the SLL in this “vir- tual sailing arena”.
The SSL is actively developing products and games to extend the visibility of the athletes. It takes inspi- ration from the popular football merchandising con- cept, t-shirts with the heroes’ portrait, official nation- al jersey (56), the Panini stickers magazine and the virtual games of Sailing & Pirates.
6. SSL SPORT CIRCUIT
The SSL Circuit is developed to promote sailing top athletes to the general public by using a clear and understandable model inspired by the annual sce- nario of major sports. Its 3 mains assets are:

The yearly “Finals” of the season among the 20 SSL best ranked sailors, in inspiration of the tennis masters
